My Galant Fuels Slowly or Clicks Off Before Full.

If you drive a 2001 or 2002 Mitsubishi Galant, you may have run into a problem in which your fuel tank takes awhile to fill up at the gas station. Or perhaps the pump keeps clicking off before the tank is full. If you’re wondering what’s going on, we can help.

This problem is known to happen on vehicles that were manufactured before July 11th, 2001. We will first explain to you why this happens and then give instructions on how to fix the problem.

Why This Problem Occurs

The normal reason for a problem like this has to do with the fuel filler. Here is a drawing below to show a little more of what part is in discussion:

Fuel sometimes has contaminates in it. The fuel filter gets rid of those. Each fuel filter has a liquid separator as part of its makeup. The liquid separator removes water from the fuel. Similarly, on the filler neck of your Mitsubishi Galant, there is also a liquid separator, for similar reasons.

On your 2001 or 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, the following diagram shows where your filler neck happens to be.

If an improper air gap exists in your fuel filler, the tank may fill slowly. This same problem can also cause a gas pump at the gas station to click off too early. If the pump cuts off before full, an improper air gap is the most likely cause of your problem.

If Your 2001 Mitsubishi Galant Fuels Slowly, Check For Obvious Issues First

Before buying the parts you’ll need to fix this problem, check for obvious issues. Although the following suggestion might seem like a no-brainer, sometimes the obvious is overlooked. If your 2001 – 2002 Mitsubishi Galant fuels slowly, check for the obvious.

One problem to check for would be to inspect the vapor hose shown in the first graphic, above. If it is kinked or restricted in any way, that will also cause the problem.

Pump nozzles can also be an issue when filling your tank. If this problem happens at several filling stations, that’s likely not the problem.

If both the pump nozzle and the vapor hose appear to be problem-free, the next step is to replace the filler assembly. You can purchase the filler assembly on our parts-order page by clicking here. We will be happy to ship it to you so that you can do the work yourself.

So to recap: if the fuel cuts off before full (or, rather, the pump clicks off before full) on your 2001 to 2002 Mitsubishi Galant, and the problem isn’t something obvious, you’ll likely need to replace your fuel filler neck assembly. West Mitsubishi in Orland, California sells them here.

In the 2020 JD Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey, Mitsubishi is ranked number 1! And each new Mitsubishi comes with an amazing warranty: a 10-year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, along with many others. When a car manufacturer is willing to stand behind the product it sells to such an extend, you know you’re getting a good vehicle.

The rest of the world seems to have caught on to the quality offered by Mitsubishi. Fortunately for everyone, that trend is continuing here in the USA as well. Come on down to West Mitsubishi to take a test drive today.
